Natural Resources
Trees: The settlers had all kinds of trees available to them: Oaks, Chestnuts, Maples in southern parts and pines, Hemlocks, Evergreens in rockier northern areas. The trees were used the wood to build houses and fences, and also used wood as fuel for fires. They also made the ashes into potash, which was used to make soap. Tree bark was handy for tanning leather; which made the animal skins soft enough to use for clothing, blankets, and more.
Animals: They hunted wild turkeys, ducks, geese, quail, grouse, and other birds. Pigeons became such popular meal that they almost went extinct. Deer and Elk provided warm sturdy skins for clothing. Animals like beavers, foxes, bears, racoon, otters were treasured for their prized furs and often used in trading. Letters found from the colonists described all the new findings in America. Dragonflies, mayflies, & wasps were discovered, while honeybees were brought over from England. Water source: Pennsylvania was close to Lake Erie, a freshwater source. Several rivers and creeks were present in the fertile land. Minerals: One of the main minerals which benefit Pennsylvanias economy was iron. This played a huge role in making manufactured goods such as tools so that they can make a profit. |
